'Guardian Angels' grave cleaning day
Every month, something quietly wonderful happens at South Brisbane Cemetery. Neighbours, families, history lovers, and curious newcomers roll up their sleeves and come together as part of our Guardian Angels program. A cheerful, hands-on initiative where we clean and care for the graves of those long gone, but never forgotten.Launched in 2018 (with roots reaching back to 2005), this volunteer program invites people of all ages and backgrounds to help preserve the beauty and dignity of one of Brisbane's most historic cemeteries. Whether you're gently washing a headstone, trimming overgrown grass, or simply uncovering a long-hidden inscription, every small act reveals a story and restores a little light to the lives buried here.These relaxed, feel-good days have become one of our most loved community events, with many participants returning month after month, some even bringing along the whole family. Children often find joy in the 'treasure hunt' aspect of the work, while adults appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and chance to connect with both history and new friends.We're working section by section, grave by grave, with care and respect. It's not just about tidying up, it's about honouring lives lived and reconnecting our community with its past. Some of the graves we clean haven't been visited in decades, and for many of our volunteers, the work becomes deeply meaningful.Over the years, we've also come together for big clean-ups after the 2011 floods and participated in Clean Up Australia Day events. The energy and warmth of these group efforts continue to inspire us.If you've ever been curious about grave care, love local history, or simply want to spend a Saturday morning doing something truly rewarding, we'd love to welcome you. No experience is needed, just bring your enthusiasm, a hat, and maybe a friend or two. We'll provide the tools, guidance, and good company.Come along and be part of something special because every grave has a story, and every helping hand makes a difference.

Illustrating Wild Worlds for Children with Meredith Downes
Join local children's author and illustrator, Meredith Downes, to explore illustrating wildlife stories for young readers.Have you ever dreamed of creating and illustrating unforgettable wildlife characters that young readers will love? Join local children's author and illustrator, Meredith Downes, as she introduces you to the world of illustrating wildlife stories for children. Be inspired and unleash your creativity in the heart of Karawatha Forest.Meredith will explore the different aspects of illustrating wildlife characters for children and young adults, from character creation to composition and visual storytelling. Through prompts and guided exercises, she will help participants to begin their journey illustrating wildlife characters that bring wild stories to life.This session pairs perfectly with Meredith's upcoming 'Writing Wild Worlds for Children' event on 18 October. Attend one or both to help guide your creative adventures.Basic art supplies will be provided (pencils, pens, coloured pencils, paper), however feel free to bring your own resources if preferred.Continue the adventure after the session with a visit to the environment centre and a gentle walk through the stunning Karawatha reserve - a wonderful setting for gathering ideas from nature.About the Presenter:Meredith Downes is a children's author and illustrator from Brisbane. These features create an immersive pathway that stretches across walls and ceilings, guiding you into the heart of the Museum.Drawing inspiration from Minimalism while reinterpreting the movement through a contemporary feminist lens, Kire brings fresh attention to the often-overlooked contributions of women in the field. Bright, colourful and welcoming for all visitors, the artwork is both joyful and thought-provoking.Responding directly to the architecture of the Museum, City Hall and the Brisbane cityscape, Kire's design reveals unexpected connections between the built environment and abstract form. Dive into story, culture and hands-on creativity with our latest Artist in Residence, Quandamooka artist Delvene Cockatoo-Collins.Journey alongside Delvene to the shores of Minjerribah and discover the ancestral story of Warrajamba, the mermaid, a living cultural legacy that Delvene continues to explore as she searches for its lost ending.Get hands-on and create your own mermaid or dugong using artist-designed stamps, connecting with the stories of Warrajamba and Yungong, the dugong. Take a free volunteer guided walk to learn about the plants and features at Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha. Our volunteer guides all have a love for Brisbane's Botanic Gardens and a desire to share their passion and knowledge with visitors.Walking tours for individuals and small groups (up to ten people) are free and do not require a booking. Have a larger group? This activity provides children with the valuable skills to be safe in and around water. Access to this session requires parental enrolment in the 1-2pm empowered to swim session which runs at the same time.

Bookings essential. Enjoy an aqua work-out designed for you- the Parent, grandparent or carer. This is your time to move, strengthen and recharge in the water while bub is with you, securely placed in a flotation seat. Suitable for all fitness levels.
English conversation group
This friendly and informal group meets in the library every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Come along to make new friends and improve your English. Learners of all levels are welcome.
