Go nuts about fruit in small spaces! Even a small garden can give you this pleasure. There's nothing quite like picking and eating fruit you've grown yourself - and you don't need a big backyard to do it!Perfect for apartment and townhouse dwellers wanting to grow on a balcony, terrace, deck or courtyard - and anyone else working with a small garden.Join Northey Street City Farm co-founder, Dick Copeman, as he shares his list of favourite fruit and nut plants for a small garden and gives advice on how to give them their best chance of growing and producing successfully.This workshop is suitable for people who live in apartments and townhouses who want to grow on the balcony, terrace, deck or courtyard, and others who have a small garden space.Youth offerThis workshop is suitable for teenagers, accompanied by mum, dad or another adult guardian, who has also paid to attend the workshop.About the facilitatorsDick Copeman has been a medical doctor, environmental activist and permaculturalist. He helped found Northey Street City Farm in Brisbane in 1994 and initiated Northey Street's permaculture design certificate training courses.AJ is a permaculturalist with a passion for educating people about the beauty of nature and our interconnectedness with all life. He is a gardening 'jack-of-all-trades' who works at City Farm Nursery and our Youth Education and Community Composting at Northey Street City Farm. AJ holds a Permaculture Design Certificate.

Alchemy for artists and gardeners
Somewhere between art and science lies the ancient practice of alchemy.For over a millennium, alchemy caught the eye of those who could see there was more to this world.Using various techniques, alchemists experimented with natural materials to discover what they were made of and what they could become.This endeavour to understand nature evolved into the fields of science we know today.In this workshop we will explore:the origins of alchemy - natural philosophy, protoscience and hermeticismthe basics of alchemy - elements, processes and goalsthe practice of alchemy in gardening, artistry and spirituality.We will delve into:the colourful world of plant dyesthe earth arts beneath our feetthe fiery power of charcoal.You will leave with a garden alchemy starter kit filled with a selection of seeds, spores and assortments!Come along and explore what you can create with nature!Youth offerThis workshop is available for teenagers who are accompanied by mum, dad, or an adult guardian who has also paid to attend the workshop.About the facilitatorAJ has a penchant for experimentation. He has been a gardener for 6 years, diligently learning how to become a better support species for the ecosystem. A budding permaculturist, he holds a permaculture design certificate and has worked at Northey Street City Farm for 3 years (Nursery, Compost Hub, Farming Team and Youth & Adult Education). AJ hasn't had much formal horticultural or artistic training but his willingness to try and acceptance of mistakes has taught him many lessons that he would like to share in the hope that it will inspire others to give things a go.

Outdoor Learning and the Curriculum: A professional development workshop for educators
This practical workshop demonstrates how the Australian Curriculum cross-curriculum priority area of sustainability can be addressed while taking learning outdoors. The content draws on place-responsive pedagogies and nature connection practices which connect students to place and foster a care of the natural world.Workshop participants will:learn about the benefits of outdoor learning and how outdoor activities can be applied to learning areas including Science, English, Humanities and Social Sciences and the Artsexperience a range of activities and tools that foster connection to place and grow children's ecological literacy - activities include 'sit spots', 'the web of life'; nature journaling; the 'Council of all Beings' and morereflect with other participants on the activities experienced and consider ways to adapt or extend them for different groups of students or for different learning areasbe introduced to 'nature names' - a practice that can be woven through units of work to support students to learn about the plants and animals in local ecosystems and their relationships with each otherreceive access to a resource pack, activity descriptions with links to the Australian curriculum and a certificate for 6 hours of professional development.The approaches and activities introduced in this workshop support students to increase critical and creative thinking and have the knowledge, understanding and skills to engage in creating a more sustainable world. Outdoor learning using these experience-based strategies also supports children's emotional well-being and physical health.While the workshop is focused on primary school teachers, the learnings are also applicable to teachers and educators who work with other students as well as homeschooling parents. The content relates particularly to sections 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.2, and 3.3 of the Australian professional standards for teachers.About the main presenter: Emma Brindal is the founder of WiseEarth Education and has been teaching and facilitating experiential learning and environmental education programs for over a decade. She also works at Northey Street City Farm, where she has developed and run a range of permaculture and sustainability activities and programs for children and adults. Emma holds a Bachelor of Environmental Science and a Master of Education (Social Ecology).Guest presenter: Artist and educator Bethan Burton of Journaling with Nature will also be running a session on nature journaling to inspire you with a range of ways that nature journaling can be used to enhance outdoor learning.Registration for the workshop: Cost: $160 school-funded/full | $110 student/unwagedWe offer a group discount of 20% for schools / organisations with 3 or more people attending. He has a vision of wandering through suburban streets lined with native plants, spotting native bees and many other insects and watching little birds and lizards dart around. Adrian would be so happy to breathe in the lovely scent of flowers every season, on every walk, on every street in every suburb of Brisbane.If you also want more nature around you, come and find out how we can all get it. And discover some amazing benefits and beautiful facts on the journey. This very short workshop is for late teens, oldies and anyone in between. Proceeds from this workshop will go to Northey Street's First Nations Collaboration fund.Youth offer This workshop is available to teenagers (12 to 18 years) accompanied by mum, dad or an adult guardian who have also paid to attend the workshop.About the facilitator Adrian Holbeck is a retired psychologist, permaculturist, citizen scientist, parent and grandparent. During the last 20 years he has studied and taught permaculture, horticulture, soil and plant science and climate action. A continuous and relentless learner (especially about the natural world), he is active in community groups and has learned to manage his own anxieties about the future: often through simple community actions.
