Volunteer Bushcare Working Bee - McDowall Bushcare Group
Join other like-minded volunteers to help protect and restore Brisbane’s unique biodiversity through our Habitat Brisbane program. Whatever your skill level and motivation, joining your local Habitat Brisbane group is a great way to connect to nature and be active and healthy, all while meeting new people, developing new skills and making a difference to your local environment. With 160 groups across the city there’s bound to be one near you! Habitat Brisbane volunteers undertake a variety of activities including: managing environmental weeds revegetating with local native plants creating habitat for native wildlife citizen science projects. The McDowall Bushcare Group meet every Tuesday from 8.30-11.30am.
Bush Kindy - World Wildlife Day
Join us for a special Bush Kindy session in celebration of World Wildlife Day! Bush Kindy is designed for children aged 3–5 years, accompanied by their parents. Each session runs for up to 45 minutes and explores a different nature-based theme each week. In honour of World Wildlife Day, we’ll be highlighting the wonders of local wildlife and the importance of protecting our natural habitats. Important information before registering: This activity is for the general public. If you are a daycare or vacation group interested in attending a similar activity please email us at BWEC@brisbane.qld.gov.au. Cost is free. Suitable for ages 3 - 5 years. Bookings are required via Eventbrite. Maximum 5 tickets. A ratio of 1 adult per 4 children is required. All adults and children (including infants) must have a ticket. As this event is popular and places limited, late arrival tickets will be forfeited to make way for available attendees. Please cancel online via Eventbrite if you cannot attend.Requirements on the day: Arrive minimum 10 minutes early to check in with staff at the centre. All children must be accompanied and directly supervised by an adult. Wear a hat, sun-safe clothing, fully enclosed walking shoes (no thongs or open shoes please), sunscreen, and bring insect repellent. Suitable old clothes recommended for messy play. The Crosby Road Bushcare Group meet regularly on the first Saturday of most months 7-9am. Venue: Crosby Road, Ascot (at Bushview bus stop 21).
Household hazardous waste: Free drop-off day
It is important to dispose of household hazardous waste safely. Household hazardous waste includes everyday products that can be corrosive, flammable, explosive, toxic or poisonous. These can include bleach, petrol, garden and pool chemicals, and cleaning solvents purchased from supermarkets and hardware stores. Brisbane residents can drop-off hazardous items for free on designated collection days throughout the year. Items must remain in their original containers and not be mixed. The next hazardous waste drop-off day is coming up at Willawong Resource Recovery Centre. Find out more, including opening times and limits, visit household hazardous waste.
Brisbane Annual Palm and Cycad Show
Calling all Palm and Cycad enthusiasts! This year's show is on the second weekend of March at the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens Auditorium. The gardens have lots of free parking. The show is your best way to purchase native or exotic palms and cycads, with a huge selection of stock to choose from. We will also be displaying mature plants, so that you can see what your purchases will look like in the future. We have a number of specialist books for sale at the show and all visitors will be able to ask our expert growers and members about the suitability of specific palms and cycads for their garden. Join us on this weekend as it will be a great place for people to indulge their gardening passion.
Free native plant pop-up
Looking to give your garden a glow up? Join us for a pop-up native plant giveaway in 2026, with free plants available thanks to Brisbane City Council’s free native plants program. The event takes place on 7 March at Kenmore Plaza, with 500 native plants to be given away on the day.
Guided walk of the Tulla-yugaipa Track (useful plants)
Join this informative guided walk around the gentle 100m Tulla-yugaipa dhagun Track. Meaning ‘place of useful plants’. A volunteer guide will lead you around the trail to identify some of the featured native plants and other wetlands resources and explain some traditional uses. After the walk, visitors can enjoy other nearby walking tracks, relax in the picnic area, and visit Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre. Walk content most suited for adults, but children are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Requirements: All children must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear a wide-brimmed hat, secure and fully enclosed walking shoes, sun-smart clothing, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Please bring drinking water and a snack or picnic lunch as there are no food outlets on site. Note: Walks are subject to weather and environmental conditions.
